I escorted a group of 44 senior citizens to see Fantasia 2000 yesterday, April 4, at the IMAX theatre in Valencia, CA. The theatre is lovely and set up beautifully, with not as many steps to walk as in other Imax theatres I have been in. When the previews came on you could immediately see the magnificence of the big screen and the surrounding sound (although some of it was super loud), and even the previews were exciting to watch, especially Cirque du Soleil in bigger than life action.
Fantasia 2000 is a must-see production, especially in the Imax format, which won't be around much longer. I think it is scheduled to leave the end of April. The hosts like Steve Martin and Bette Midler introduce the numbers and they are great. The movie is marvelous, exciting, and breath-takingly beautiful. The music segments are marvelous played by the best orchestras and musicians, and the animation is spectacular. You will marvel at how every beat of the music is matched perfectly in sync with the images you see on the screen --- the changing colors, the slow and fast movements, and of course the animation.
I loved the original Fantasia and even found that some segments were funnier and more laughable then. This film seemed to be more serious and I missed not seeing any hippopottami dancing like in the original. But what I saw was utterly beautiful and what I heard was magnificent. The whole group that I took loved every minute. If you haven't seen it yet, go now. You'll be losing a lot when it moves to regular theatres. The Imax screen adds so much to the movie.
