The January 1, 2000 release of “Fantasia 2000”, the long awaited sequel to the 1940 classic “Fantasia”, is being shown exclusively in IMAX format through April 30, 2000. I happened to see it at the Tech Museum in San Jose, California. Unlike most IMAX theaters, the Tech’s theater is a state of the art Domed screen. The domed screen is a little hard to see if you are seated in the lower half of the theater. I was seated about midway up the amphitheater, and found the curved screen somewhat annoying, while I overheard several audience members actually complaining of nausea. So I would not recommend a domed theater, if you can avoid it.
The movie itself was wonderful.
My personal favorite sequences of the film included “The Pines of Rome”, which featured Humpback Whales who could fly, and “Rhapsody in Blue”, the Gershwin classic set which depicted the intertwining lives of several New Yorkers, circa 1930. The “pomp and Circumstance” piece featuring Donald and Daisy Duck in a send up of Noah’s Ark, was also well done.
Every feature was drawn in a different style of animation.
In between each segment, celebrities introduced the next piece. The presenters included Steve Martin, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, Penn and Teller, and James Earl Jones. I thought that these introduction worked well overall.
The one piece held over from the original “Fantasia” was "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". While providing a nice bridge between the two movies, the film quality was MUCH grainier during this sequence. It is hard to believe that it could not have been cleaned up better for “Fantasia 2000”.
The only other small quibble I would have is that "The Carnival of the Animals" segment, with a bunch of Flamingo playing with a yo-yo, was very short compared with the other segments. It was fairly humorous, and the film could have used an extended funny moment
All in all, the Movie was Fantastic, but I think that due to the difficulties caused by the Domed IMAX theater, I would rather see it in a regular theater.
One last comment: My wife and I took 4 kids, aged 5-10. The younger kids fell asleep, while the older kids enjoyed the movie. I think this a movie that appeals more to Adults and older kids.
