Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell is a classic novel, a masterpiece of literature, and one of my personal favorite books. I rented the movie, curious to see how well this classic story is portrayed on film, and honestly, I came out disappointed.
Nineteen Eighty-Four is the chilling novel of a totalitarian society where the government has complete control over people's thoughts, beliefs and memories. They also alter history, and can change the language so society can't come up with their own ideas and values, among other things. The story is based on a man named Winston Smith, who hates the government and their ways and will do anything he can to rebel.
As with most book to movie comparisons, this movie was shameful compared to the literature. I felt that too many important scenes and details were left out, scene's were rearranged, and if I were watching the movie for the first time with out having read the book, I would have been confused and would have had trouble understanding some major parts to the plot until the later part of the movie.
So for what it's worth, the movie was decent. If I were the producer, I would have made some major changes. But hey, it's a done deal. And I would deffinitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves George Orwell or who has read the book. One last thought: John Hurt did an impressive job playing the role of Winston Smith, a role I can't imagine being too easy to pull off. But he did it, and I was impressed. That is all that matters.
