Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
An oil rig and her crew are drafted by the military to help find a downed nuclear sub near a bottomless crevice. Only the sub is not the only thing that lives there.
James Cameron took a very risky undertaking in bringing this underwater spectacle to the big screen. If you look at the behind-the-scenes documentaries in this DVD, then you will see the huge production costs that went into this deep-sea thriller. The tank, the specially made divers helmets made for the film, and the countless hours are spent in the water tank, make you appreciate the vision that Cameron has.
The acting was rock-solid, and the location of the story being underwater was very creative instead of using outer space. The movie touches on the nature of humans to destroy Earth, and our ability to overcome that weakness.
I always thought that Ed Harris was an underrated actor, and deserved main actor status in movies like these. With others that surround him like Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn, help to bring the cast full circle.
The special effects of the water entity, the miniatures of the submarine and mini-subs were very convincing, and brought scale to the film.
