This is a wonderful story that is directed by Stephen Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, E.T.). It stars Richard Dryfus as a forest pilot who dies trying to put out a fire and comes back as a ghost to help his girlfriend (Holly Hunter) to learn to love again and to help a young pilot be successful in flying and in love. Also in this film is a cameo by the legendary Audrey Hepburn, who plays Dryfus' guardian angel and John Goodman, who plays a friend to both Hunter and Dryfus. It is a touching story that gives you faith that our loved ones are on the other side and are watching and protecting us. Hunter plays her role perfectly and you really fall in love with her simplicity and her idyosyncracies. Goodman plays the protective friend and Audrey Hepburn, this being her last movie performance, who most would say looked like an angel, played this part so well you believed that she was an angel. Dryfus struggles throughout the whole picture to let go of his love for Hunter so that she can learn to love again. It just so happens that their is another pilot who was so much like Dryfus that it scares Hunter but she finds her self falling in love with him. Not after talking his ear off about Dryfus. After Dryfus realizes that he must let Hunter go, he helps this young pilot to not make the same mistake's that he made. He tries to guide him while his is flying by putting idea's in his head. Dryfus, surprised by the fact that he is really getting through to him, realizes that this boy has talent. When an emergency comes up and the pilot is suppose to go and put a dangerous fire out, Hunter, distraught over the loss of Dryfus still, decides to fly in this highly dangerous area and do it herself. While up there she starts to daydream and her plane crashes in the ocean, which is just what she wants. Dryfus who is trying to get through to her realizes she wants this. She wants to end it all but Dryfus doesn't let that happen. He realizes he needs to let go and she after him appearing to her in the ocean, realizes that their is life after death and that she has things she needs to do here on earth. Goodman and the pilot rush frantically as she walks ever so calmly to them now knowing that her life is about to begin again.
This film is a classic and has always made me cry. I need to believe in things like this or what would life be. Whenever I see negativity in the world, I put on a film like this to cheer me up. That may sound funny because it is sad but it helps me to feel closer to that Higher Power. I recommend this movie highly. My fiance has seen this movie and he loved it so it's not just a "chick flick" but I am sure that mostly women have seen this. I urge you to see this, especially if you feel alone, because it really gives you hope.
