My favorite Vietnam movie is Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, followed by Cimino's Deer Hunter. Apocalypse Now is an also-ran, but for all that it has many brilliant, unforgettable images.
The best reason to watch this movie is as a companion to the 'making of' documentary, called "Hearts of Darkness", made by Coppola's wife. The documentary has an extremely compelling storyline-- inspired director gets in over his head, fails to come up with a coherent script.
But the movie itself lacks a coherent theme, with the story of Brando's character never really shedding light on the Vietnam experience, nor the darkness of the human soul.
