I do not know how or when I ended up seeing this film, but I think it was one of those days long ago when every neighbourhood store had a video shelf. Barbarian Queen, heck why not?
As a teen back then I suppose I was at least a little more impressionable than I am today, and what I saw in Barbarian Queen made me fall in love with it's lead Ms. Lana Clarkson.
Lana Clarkson plays Amathea, the Barbarian Queen. On her wedding night, her small village is plundered by an evil tyrant. Her sister is raped and taken, the men (including her husband to be) are taken as well to be made as slaves.
Amathea escapes the plundering of her village and arrives back in the aftermath. She meets up with two of her friends that also had escaped and vows to avenge her village and free their men.
What follows is your basic sword and sorcery low budget film. Lots of nude women, swordfights, and quirky humour. Never really a film to be taken seriously, the movie jumps from what tries to be a serious scene to usually a topless woman doing something, whether it's fighting the guards or flirting with them.
The major notable scene among it's male followers is when Amathea is on a torture rack. Captured during a failed attempt to free her village's men, Amathea is to be tortured on the rack. Topless and defiant, our warrior hero takes punishment from her torturer for quite a long scene, with none of it being boring.
Barbarian Queen appears to have been used to exploit the popularity of Lana Clarkson after her brief role in Deathstalker. The movie became one of the top low budget barbarian/exploitation films from the period. It even spawned a sequel that really had nothing to do with the original other than Lana Clarkson being placed on the rack again.
The acting is quite bad, but if you can enjoy a low budget film and have watched shows like Hercules, or Xena for it's humour and sexy cast, this film may be worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of any of those Barbarian movies of the eighties.
Barbarian Queen also inspired Roger Corman (who produced the film) to create yet another sexy hero movie Black Scorpion starring Joan Severance.
Deathstalker
The film that introduced us to the future Barbarian Queen.
Update Sept 30, 2K2
I just received an autographed copy of Barbarian Queen from Lana Clarkson herself (available for order at www.lanaclarkson.com). They may be a tad more expensive to purchase than at Amazon or some such, but I highly recommend getting them from her site!
Update Feb. 2K3
Oh my God! It's all over the news...Lana Clarkson is dead! Shot to death in Phil Spector's home! Very sad. To anyone who knew Lana you have my condolences. She will definitely be missed by all of us cult film fans around the world. Goodbye, my Queen.
