The Beast is set in Afghanistan, with a realistic setting and Afghans
that speak Arabic (subtitled). While most war movies have combatants freely speaking to each other in a common tongue (English), here the captured Russian and Afghans have trouble communicating. There is an underlying theme in this movie about religious beliefs and practices, so this isn't merely a shoot 'em up war movie. Rather, the Islamic beliefs of the Afghans play a part in the plot of the movie. Also, the tank commander defends his position on the meaning of "duty" very forcefully, so there are many different views presented here.
The acting is top notch, especially for the tank commander and many of the Afghans. The action is very realistic (especially the attack on the town). This movie will leave you with many images that you will think back upon later. Overall, I enjoyed this film.
