Humphrey Bogart's best, this simple yarn will keep you guessing, even those of you prejudiced against black and white films, subtitling and widescreen. This film should be thrust forward as THE film noir movie. It has all the rules of the genre down without fault.
In addition, the supporting cast is amazing. Even the Irish general (who has one scene) gives a great performance and really adds to the amusing, ironic suspense.
Lauren Bacall is Bogart's most believable mate. She's the perfect H2 to his O. Not a single moment of their scenes together lags. At this point, most Humphrey Bogart movies blur together for me, I being one of the hugest 14-year-old motion picture fan in the history of the art.
This film is a shining gem in a mass of dark smoky pictures to which category it belongs.
