If John Carpenter made it, it's gold in my book.
Sadly, I don't think this is true anymore. I just caught a preview of Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars and damn was it embarassing. His old stuff was certainly the bee's knees, but oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Nice job on one of my favorites. I thought everybody knew about this film?

Man, this movie is the very definition of cult classic! I only know 2 other people who have seen it, and they love it just like I do. An embarrassingly under-appreciated film, but a fine review.

A guilty pleasure, maybe, but it's one of the few films I enjoy as much now as I did when I was 15. Nicely done.

The Russell/Carpenter commentary tracks are reason numero uno to own a DVD/Laserdisc system. They're the best that I've ever heard and really give importance to the format. Seriously, man.
Here's hoping we get the deluxe DVD treatment for Escape from New York - those three Russell/Carpenter tracks, alone, are worth the investment.
Nice job, chum

Big Trouble in Little China (Reply to this comment)

Mike,
I don't think I have to tell you that this is a classic review of a favorite cult classic of mine. You definitely did a better than a stupendous job of giving recognition to an under-appreciated film. I especially enjoyed reading your comparison of Kurt Russell's character Jack Burton to Ash from the Evil Dead series. And I agree with you on the special effects: sure they're cheesy, but they are a lot more entertaining than the CGI littered stuff that is crammed down our throats these days.
Fantastic work. Bravo!

My brother and I discovered "Big Trouble in Little China" on VHS in the late '80s, and we've been hooked ever since. I too snagged the recent DVD edition, and fully agree with your analysis. Man, I'd love to see a "20 years later" sequel from Carpenter and Russell.
Great job, as always.
Best,
Joe

I actually first caught this movie on TNT's MonsterVision when it was hosted by Joe Bob Briggs and fell in love with it ever since. Halloween. The Thing. Escape From New York. They Live. If John Carpenter made it, it's gold in my book.
It's also nice to see that, like The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China found a nice home on DVD. Once again, a terrific review that shows why you're my favorite advisor this side of mrsocko316.

Big, big fan of "The Thing", which to me, rivaled the original "Alien" for suspense, and took it a step farther in terms of horror.
I'll definitely add "Big Trouble in Little China" -- which I had never heard of -- to the list for an upcoming visit to the video store.
Thanks, Mike. Your usual good job.
cheers,

I would probably rank The Thing as one of my top horror films (mind you, I don't watch a lot of that genre).
I also liked BTiLC. I appreciated your in-depth review of this one.

...but for years I've used the title of this film as an expression for a tight situation (I'm sure I'm not alone) After uttering it, I always think of the film and wonder why I haven't seen it yet. Considering how much I liked The Thing, and other Carpenters. Thanks for the reminder.

Great review,
From a great writer,
To a great movie!
Wonderful read, I am a big fan of BTILC as well, but the funny thing is I had not seen it until its DVD release. The DVD is as money as you say it is. The transfer for an eighties film is amazing, it looks like it could have been made yesterday, and next to Kevin Smith commentaries, The John Carpenter and Kurt Russel commentary track is among the best around. You get a great feeling for how good of friends they are, they even start asking each other about there kids and what sports there playing, fun stuff.
Nice work,
Justin
