I saw this movie when it came on USA's Super Action Tuesday. I wasn't sure what it would be about since it looked so old, but I found myself staying up to watch the entire movie. Black Rain is an entertaining movie full of subplots. It has just about everything: action, suspense, and drama, and it's all bundled up in one movie. It also has an interesting look at life in Japan.
Michael Douglas plays a complicated cop from New York who knows well that the difference between right and wrong is hidden is a big gray area. In the middle of being investigated by internal affairs, he and his partner bust a Japanese crime-lord after killing two people and stealing something important. As luck would have it, Japan asks for New York to send him back to Japan, and Douglas is assigned to the duty of escorting this criminal. He and his partner are greeted by gangsters parading as Japanese police and thus they give the killer back to his own people. Not exactly happy about this major mistake, the two New York cops try to work with the Japanese authority to secure this criminal where he belongs. That’s when they run into some real problems: a police force who won't work with them, witnesses who won't talk, threats and attempts from gangsters, and a whole cultural barrier.
This movie has some great action and a great story full of subplots that impact the main plot. Also, the cultural barrier for two Americans trying to get something done for this case in Japan adds to this movie making it unique and different from the normal police movie.
