Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Bruce Willis looks so young! In Blind Date he plays Walter, a hard-working guy who doesn't find time to sleep ("Walter, you look like ****."). This movie is a romantic comedy that appeals to men as well as women. It is rated PG-13 and came out in 1987.
Walter needed a date for a business dinner, and was desperate. He ends up going on a blind date to the dinner with Nadia (Kim Basinger). He was warned not to let Nadia drink, but he didn't listen, and she quickly becomes "real wild". The beginning is a little slow, and when they were at an art gallery it was a tad boring. But suddenly her "psychotic ex-boyfriend" shows up so you know it's going to get interesting. At least Walter found humor in the situation!
Then it gets slow again. Then it picked up again. This happens frequently. Though it seems boring at times, it's best to just keep watching. I liked some of the phrases they used such as "slime-ball pig." There was a lot of the color red in the movie. This included Nadia's clothing, the menu, the waitor's collar, etc. Nadia manages to create chaos for everyone she comes near. She even causes Walter to get fired. I loved that the ex-boyfriend resurfaced. I find humor in stupid things like cars crashing through stores, so luckily for me that exact thing happened.
Bruce Willis seemed like a stranger to me at first but about 40 minutes into the movie he seemed just as good as always. I generally like Bruce Willis because he seems like just an average guy. This makes his character believable, and easy to relate to.
The first part of the movie really was pretty dull. I tried to keep in mind that it was an 80's movie but there was too much no-dialogue scenes and cheesy cinematography (i.e. the fade-in while they were slow dancing). My favorite character was the ex-boyfriend because he provided the most entertainment for me. I'm not that entertained just by watching a drunk girl.
Obviously everyone who watches is going to feel bad for Walter for everything he has to go through because of Nadia. Of course he could've gotten rid of her at any point, so you know since he keeps putting up with her that he is going to end up liking her. Despite the predictability of this, I still was curious to see how things would turn out in the end. The movie makes fun of itself in a way when the ex-boyfriend shows up yet again and Nadia says "I thought we lost him," and Walter replies, "what fun would that be?"
The entire time I was watching this movie I knew that I could've turned it off at any point and not wondered what had happened. There's nothing about it that really draws you in or makes you need to see what happens. I was curious so i kept watching, but it really was pretty dull. But aren't most romantic comedies? We all know how they're going to end, but we like watching anyway. Despite the dullness of the beginning, the movie does a 180 and is pretty funny the night before the wedding and at the wedding.
This movie is rated PG-13, but even so, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 20 because I don't think it would interest them. This movie doesn't appear to be well-known. I think it was good for an 80's movie (I have low expectations for that decade) but I don't have any desire to ever watch it again. At the same time I can see how it would appeal to some. If you are someone who is easily humored and doesn't like to think too much, this movie is for you.
