Yes it did. That really helped to show that he wasn't as tough as he acted.
My favorite line of the film (a film I don't really like, mind you) is when Nelson asks the assistant principal if he raids Barry Manilow's wardrobe!
That was one of the best lines in the movie.

He seemed to enjoy focusing in on one person and picking until they blew up.
