I think "The Breakfast Club" is probably one of the most important movies that high school, (and even junior high age) young people could see.
I used to work as a high school counselor, and as a family therapist with adolescents.....and this movie was almost always one that I strongly recommended that families see together. If not, then suggesting the teens see it almost as "homework", was discussed. I too feel strongly that seeing the genuine feelings expressed throughout this film, the dialogue, the characters' real pain, and especially the slowly revealed ways that they showed how they covered those wounds, made it one of of my top 3 favorite movies.
The lessons it contained, and seeing the young peoples' defenses gradually fall away, was a powerful experience. Without giving away the plot, I would only say that what takes place in just 8 hours in these teenagers lives, can be a catalyst for young viewers to take a look at their own lives.....and hopefully recognize the human feelings displayed on the screen, as feelings they've had, and most importantly, they're all OK feelings. Seeing them slowly and tentatively being revealed by the characters remains a movie highlight for me, as far as films that can make a lasting difference on the viewer...you don't soon forget "The Breakfast Club".
