Why do I say that, you may ask? Well, the real story of Good Will Hunting is about an exceptional person who is trapped in the life of a loser, and it takes a special relationship with an older person to help the child take a step toward manhood.
In Breaking Away, Dennis Christopher plays a high school graduate living in Bloomington, Indiana, with no plans of any kind, just drifting. But he happens to be an incredibly gifted bicyclist. His friends are all also drifting aimlessly, picking up odd jobs, and living seemingly empty lives.
I don't really want to go into more depth, but a great story emerges. It is not a fast-paced film, but the bicycle races (scored to Italian opera music!) are quite engaging.
This movie won Best Screenplay back in 1979, and if you are looking for a good 'rule of thumb' for seeing movies, you can start by ignoring Best Pictures (e.g. Titanic, Forrest Gump), and renting all the Best Screenplays (e.g. Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction) that you can get your hands on!
