The 1931 Universal FRANKENSTEIN is one of the all time classic horror movies ever made, and this film surpasses it on every level.
Director James Whale pulls out all the stops, with studio big wigs giving him a free hand after the smashing success of the original. Karloff is back at the monster, as is Colin Clive as the tormented Dr. Frankenstein.
With the aide of the outrageous Dr. Pretorious, superbly played by Ernest Thesiger as an even more mad scientist, they create a mate for the monster in the form of Elsa Lanchester.
Tragically, Universal chose not to remaster this print, and the film is somewhat grainy, but this is more than made up for with the digital recording of perhaps the greatest horror soundtrack ever committed to film.
Whale’s addition of humor adds greatly to this much darker film, which explores the elements of how far man should go in his efforts to ‘play god’.
Highest possible recommendation, although it’s difficult to watch some scenes and not think of Mel Brooks hilariously on target spoof of the Frankenstein series, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.
