I have seen this classic 80's romance over and over again and I am still entertained every time I see it. This is a heart-touching romance good for teenagers as well as adults. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, as it is a good reflection on high school life and the things everyone sees as traumatic, life-altering events during that time.
Poor Ronald, obviously one of the class geeks, is stuck cutting grass to make money and save for a telescope. He is enamored by one of his client's daughters, Cindy Manceeni, the popular, blond hair, blue eyed cheerleader. She goes to a party and is devastated when someone spills a drink and stains the outfit she had stolen from her mother for the evening. She'll need lots of money to get a new one and Donald comes to the rescue, providing his life savings for her if she will only date him. In his mind he thinks that dating her will make him popular. She swears it won't work...but it gradually does.
There are many antics throughout this movie that were really funny, especially the African Anteater Ritual. As Donald is preparing to go to a school dance, he wants to learn how to dance, so he turns on what he thinks is American Bandstand. He copies and learns the dance the people are doing on TV. Once at the dance, he starts the crazy dance, looking like an idiot, people start to follow him and the whole gym is acting like fools dancing crazy. The funny part being, the group of nerds in the corner realize what they are doing is the African Anteater Ritual and not a real dance at all and they get quite a kick out of this.
There are many heart-touching points in this movie as Cindy begins to fall for Ronald. The "break-up" scene is classic, as is the scene at the very end where they ride off into the sunset on his lawnmower.
I highly recommend this movie for any age group. It is sure to take adults on a flashback to their own high school days and bring back their own flood of memories. This is one of my all time favorite 80's movies.
