Errol Flynn's first Hollywood film was also a first for Director Michael Curtiz, Composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and leading lady Olivia DeHavilland. "Captain Blood" established Errol Flynn as a major star and began his long association with Warner Brothers which helped make that studio a big success at the box office throughout the thirties and forties.
The 26 year-old Errol Flynn, stars as Dr. Peter Blood, an English physician who is wrongly punished for helping a rebel, enslaved, and sent to Jamaica to serve out his punishment. His buyer is beautiful, spoiled Arabella Bishop, played by the lovely and talented Olivia DeHavilland. Blood's doctor skills stand him in good stead, and soon he has the run of the island. He uses the trust to his advantage, escaping. He captures a Spanish ship and becomes "Captain Blood".
Screen villain Basil Rathbone plays Captain Levasseur, at first Blood's superior in piracy, later his rival. Blood signs articles, joins Levasseur's pirate squadron, and goes off separately to pillage the Caribbean. Later when they meet again at the pirate rendezvous Levasseur has taken the beautiful Arabella captive and intends to keep her as his share of the booty. This, Blood will not stand, and an epic sword fight ensues, in which Blood emerges victorious. This fight, along with other sea battles depicted in this movie established Flynn as a swashbuckler, second to none.
Captain Blood returns to defend Jamaica, which is under French attack. The French repelled, news arrives from England. There is a new king, the old king's prisoners are pardoned! Captain Blood abandons piracy and is made Governor of Jamaica. A happy ending to a thrilling tale!
