Synopsis: Jeannie joins the cheerleading squad to improve the odds of losing her virginity, since her boyfriend Norm doesn't seem interested in taking on the task. Jeannie's fellow teammates make it their special project to deflower her before the end of the season, while getting plenty of their own action on the side. As the big game approaches and the smell of defeat grows stronger, the girls decide to tire out the opposing team with their special brand of sexercise. Unfortunately, they miss the new guy on the team in their horny rampage. The fate of the game is left in the hands of Jeannie and her intact cherry.
Title: Cheerleaders, what else is their to say? Released in Europe as The 18 Year Old Schoolgirls.
Analysis: The cheerleader fetish appeals particularly to those of us who were never able to score with one in high school or college. Director Paul Glickler (Hot Circuit) cashed in on this fantasy with The Cheerleaders (1973), which spawned an entirely new market in adult entertainment. The influence is felt in classic adult films as well as contemporary, in softcore as well as hardcore. Debbie Does Dallas (1978) is probably the best known hardcore cheerleader film in existence, but Glickler's influence is strongly sensed. The title character Debbie appears to be loosely based upon a character by the same name in The Cheerleaders. Not coincidentally, Brandy Woods plays Debbie in The Cheerleaders and Bambi Woods plays Debbie in Debbie Does Dallas. The same impingement is felt in Debbie Does Dallas '99, where the plot and several scenes are strikingly similar. Even porn giant Playboy capitalizes on the pom-pom revolution in its magazines (Playboy's College Girls) and movies (Playboy's Cheerleaders). I suppose Glickler can be considered the father of cheerleader porn. It may not be the most coveted title, but I'm sure it makes a great icebreaker at parties. Now that I've given you an abbreviated history of cheerleader porn, I'll move onto the film itself.
The cast is a who's who list in the land of nobodies, although it's unlikely that many of them used their real names. What are the chances of Richard Meatwhistle, Jovita Bush and Denise Dillaway working together on the same film? Add on Jonathan Jacobs, Jack Jonas and Terri Teague and there's too much alliteration to be believable. There were no glowing performances, but the skilled use of type-casting compensates for the lack of theatrical talent.
Stephanie Fondue (as Jeannie) is cute as a button. The awkwardness in her lines actually makes her more credible as the horny virgin who becomes more sexually frustrated as time goes on. Jonathan Jacobs handles his role as the asexual boyfriend Norm with the appropriate amount of gravity. Even though his character is far from humorous, his omnipresence (car wash, football team, hot dog vendor, delivery guy, snack shop, etc) adds a comedic element. Richard Meatwhistle has a pimpish quality that suits him perfectly for Jon, the ladies' man and part-time bookie. Raoul Hoffnung (Mr. Novi, the janitor) and Jack Jonas (Mr. Davis, Jeannie's father) were born to play middle-aged perverts. Jovita Bush (Bonnie) throws in some ethnic diversity and Sandy Evans (Suzie) plays well alongside the sterotypical lesbian coach (Terri Teague). Denise Dillaway (Claudia), Kim Stanton (Patty) and Brandy Woods (Debbie) round out an outstanding cast of beautiful women, notable more for their curves than their talent.
The Cheerleaders lacks any real substance. The jokes are mostly sophomoric jabs and sexual innuendos. The humor is mostly derived from the outrageous story, the stereotypical characters and the 70's era music. Just as in Candy Stripe Nurses, the film portrays women with the same sexual ardor that is typically ascribed to men. Since The Cheerleaders is more pornographic than revolutionary, I won't further dwell on its socio-cultural significance.
It's common to hear complaints like It wasn't funny, The acting was terrible and There's no plot; but none of this matters in the end. The Cheerleaders was never intended to captivate anything besides the attention of horny men. Glickler accomplishes this fete with flying colors -- or, more accurately, with flying red panties. To judge The Cheerleaders as anything other than softcore porn would be missing its purpose. So let's whip out the cheerleader checklist and see what fantasies Glickler delivers:
* Girl's Locker Room - Check, Check, Check
* Girl's Shower Room - Check
* Girl Showering in the Boy's Locker Room - Check
* On a School Bus, In the Bushes & On a Waterbed - Check
* Gratuitous Ass shots During Routine - Check
* Two Girls on a Stationary Bike - Check
* Cheerleader and Older Man - Check, Check
* Orgy with Cheerleaders and the Football Team - Check
* Slumber Party - Check
* Under the Bleachers - NO! no?
90%, not bad! Viewing The Cheerleaders exclusively as a sexual romp with great historical significance, I can comfortably give it 5 stars. The women are beautiful, the scenes are steaming and the full frontal and rear nudity are plentiful.
Availability: UPDATED! The Cheerleaders has now been released on DVD (Aug 2003) as part of The Cheerleaders Collection, and is available on Netflix! Previously, the VHS version retailed for $79.95, but now you can purchase it brand NEW on DVD for a much more reasonable amount. Final Comments: The Cheerleaders is one of the best softcore films ever produced. While it may not appeal to the widest audience, it is worth watching for any fan of cheerleader porn. Want more?
