I definitely did NOT swallow all of the "tripe" of this movie--just appreciated it for what it is: an honest portrayal of what was offered to special needs children of this time.

And I agree with you about the love. I've always been more of the school of the kind of person Judy Garland portrayed in this movie--though I also believe in the Burt Lancaster character's theory of not letting kids get away with being less than they can be.

The woman needed to be firmer with the kids--while not losing that gentle, personal soft-touch--but the man needed more of what the woman was offering.

The last scene in the movie shows that he has come to realize this.

Dated, unfortunate film (Reply to this comment)

While the first reviewer swallows all the tripe the film proports as truth, it is quite obvious to anyone who has taken any education classes that this film only shows how little anyone knew about mental retardation and how it affects the family as well as what mentally retarded children need. Removing non-violent children from their homes obviously was not the answer and it seems very bizarre that giving a child affection was not allowed at this institution. If you've got a 12 year old with the mental capacity of a 5 year old, you're going to refuse to give him the affection and care a 5 year old requires? Children don't leave their parents' homes generally before they're 18 and they are loved and nutured throughout that time. It's a wonderful thing if mentally retarded children can be educated and trained to have some place in society as workers, but often this is not the case and their only purpose in life is living. Having a mentally retarded nephew who is 15 but is basically a 4 year old, I can attest to the fact that children need love as well as training and anyone who wishes to remove a child from tender care does an inhuman and destructive thing.

One Of My Favorites (Reply to this comment)

If a movie/story/poem, etc. has a word like "retarded" or "Down Syndrome" in its title or synopsis, you can bet I'll be watching it if I'm not otherwise engaged.

This happens to be one of my favorite movies.

But don't be misled by what you see there.

This shows what it was like to work with special needs kids back during that time, so it's historical!

I'm happy to report, though, that helping the special angels of our society to live full and productive lives has advanced way beyond what you're shown in this movie.

Some even go to college!

Early intervention has a lot to do with this.

And working with these angels is far from being a thankless job! You'll be blessed manifold!!!

At least, this has been my experience!

When you find time and want to, I hope you'll read three Epinions I've written on this subject (to date).

I'm going to go fetch the URLs right now.
