Cons: They should have let Spielberg do his director's cut in the first place.
The Bottom Line: Special effects were spectacular for the year released. If your child is easily frightened, wait until they are old enough to understand and discuss such a complicated idea.
4paws's Full Review: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Before there was ET, there was the Close Encounters alien encounter. Steven Spielberg really outdid himself with the special effects, which are the star of the show, along with John Williams score.
The human story revolves around two main characters played by Richard Dreyfuss and Melinda Dillon with Teri Garr playing Dreyfuss' distressed and "befuddled" wife. Dreyfuss has an encounter one night when he is called to work on his job for a city wide blackout. Dillon experiences her encounter at home from which her son is abducted. The thing that these 2 people have in common with hundreds of other humans is the image "burned" in their minds following the experience and the desire to find that image.
Dreyfuss and Dillon do an excellent job portraying people who have experienced something few others have experienced and then are obsessed with solving the riddle of the image. She, by drawing and he, by sculpting. Actually, he goes so far as to frighten his entire family, so that they leave. He then continues building the "tower" in his living room with mud and foliage. They actually met the first time with their initial encounter and are reunited through a stream of events. Of course, this story is dependent upon the belief that the "big bad government" is out to deceive us regarding anything they feel we are not smart enough to understand. So, they try to keep the "rendezvous" a secret from the world. (probably one of the worst kept secrets).
Dreyfuss and Dillon are determined to reach the site, although they are not sure why. Their efforts are rewarded with more revelations and the fulfillment of their respective searches.
Spielberg’s movie is designed to present his view of alien beings as benevolent and even child-like, although so far advanced we must look like the most pitiful of lifeforms. With the addition of the dazzling special effects and William musical score, the story wraps it all up in a most entertaining package. It’s the kind of movie that deserves more than one viewing.
