I truly believe that Commando is one of the best films Schwarzenegger starred in. This film has a mixture of settings all with great action. Not to mention the one of a kind humor of Schwarzenegger making this movie great entertainment. The story is a classic for action. Bad guy does something or takes something, good guy goes to get it back, and fights begin.
The story
From the very beginning, you are captivated by the activities of what appears to be random killings of ordinary men all done carefully and uniquely. It is not until Matrix (Arnold) is told that his old commando unit was hunted down from their cover in retired life that you figure out what happened. So, some soldiers are left to help protect Matrix, but they of course, fail. This leaves Matrix putting up a good fight at his lovely home in the middle of the woods on top of a mountain.
Turns out, the attackers are an old rival of Matrix's, and they want him to kill some head of state for a small country that Matrix once helped come in to power. To insure that Matrix will comply, they take his little daughter. This is only the beginning of this film. Matrix then invents a new way to escape from a plane while being guarded. This leaves the movie with about an hour and ten minutes of packed sequences of action and adventure.
What's so great about this movie?
While the plot line is somewhat typical, the different settings allow tons of different ways for Arnold to kill someone, blow up something, wreck vehicles, and barely make it out with his life. Each scene is a short film of its own. You have fighting in his home, car chase scenes, airplane escapes, fighting at a hotel, robbing an army surplus store or "shopping", escaping from the police, and an all out war. On top of that, a great rivalry of good verse bad. It is a pretty short movie, only about an hour and a half, but I have scene movies that go twice that long and still don't have this much content.
