Judging the long ago from a later perspective (Reply to this comment)
by richwig
You can tell a reviewer is an armchair quarterback speaking decades later when he says something this silly:
"However, when the robot lifts a limp Patricia Neal, it is reminiscent of the classic still from "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954). "
A movie filmed in 1951 can't be judged negatively by a scene from a movie filmed in 1954. That's only from your perspective as a reviewer decades later. Criticize the latter film, if you must.
The movie presages Star Trek (Michael Rennie as Spock), E.T., Close Encounters, ....
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" is perhaps a bit preachy, maybe even a pitch for the United Nations, but put it in context. 1951 was so soon after World War II. Not too odd to wish that nations would not engage in war for a while.
AMC ran this movie tonight, as Hamas and Hezbollah and Israel and Lebabon may be at war -- and the whole thing threatens to turn into a huge Mideast conflagration if not World War III. It would not be bad for nations and people to listen to a message well-crafted just after World War II.

Another HoHo From BriKo (Reply to this comment)

It's always entertaining to see just how wrong Mr. Koller can be. Yet again he seems to be under the hilariously mistaken impression that something is bad just because he doesn't like it. Personally, I loathe the work of Picasso. I freely acknowledge it's greatness. I just don't like it. This is a distinction Mr. Koller seems to have considerable difficulty with. Quality and personal taste can be quite divergent. If he really liked something like, say, "They Saved Hitler's Brain" would he claim it was a good film? I happen to absolutely LOVE "Exorcist II: The Heretic", but I would never claim that it was anything other than mind bogglingly bad.
Out of more than 70 reviews for "The Day The Earth Stood Still" on Rotten Tomatoes Mr. Koller's is one of only two negative ones. Ratios like this are not uncommon with his reviews. To paraphrase from another comment I wrote regarding his review of "The Lion In Winter" it's either a childishly perverse desire to p*ss on something good just to be different, or bad taste, pure and simple. Most probably a combination of the two.
"The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a landmark science fiction film, and wears the jibes and snipes of dubious critics like badges of honor

In my opinion, you are way off base (Reply to this comment)

TDTESS is beyond reproach as far as I am concerned, especially considered in the context of the time. I could give you any number of reasons, but I am sure you have heard them all.
I will say that I often hate movies (especially new ones) because of their lousy scripts. The script here is literate and important.
As for the "cheesy" music, keep in mind it all sounds that way due to the numerous imitations over the last 50 years. This music was the first of its kind, in fact this is the first truly modern sci-fi movie.
When watching old movies, you must understand them in the context of the times.
