Thank you for coming way back to 2000 for me, Stephen.
[I thought for a moment, Sylvester Stalone had slipped into Dieterle's film.]
Joe August, to be fair, also photographed TWENTIETH CENTURY, THE WHOLE TOWN'S TALKING, GUNGA DIN, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, and THEY WERE EXPENDABLE. He was a brilliant black and white photographer, and as we can see here, a quite versatile one.
I look forward to your review, Stephen.
William Dieterle in chains must be quite a sight!
Thank you again for the rating, and taking the trouble.

Copland (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
August shot some of the "arty" Irish Ford movies of the mid-1930s (The Informer, The Plough and the Stars), but, as I'm sure you know, in categorizing himself at the famous Director's Guild shoot-out, he said "I'm John Ford. I make westerns."
I'm looking forward to seeing Dieterle starring in a pre-emigration "Sex in Chains" that is in my NetFlix queue.

Dear Chad: Thank you. It puzzles me that the film is so little known or discussed.
Regards.

Again? (Reply to this comment)

It appears I am once again obligated to thank you for an outstanding review of one of my personal favorites among movies. I've seen the movie many times, in varying lengths, and never seem to tire of it. I'm captivated by Walter Houston's Mr. Scratch, and even now can hear in my memory the slyly goading inflections used in reciting the quote you chose (again, my favorite line). I learned much from you, all of which just validates my own feeling for and about this particular movie. Thanks again.
