This seems to be a leitmotif of Wyler movies, at least from the 30s, such as the Bette Davis vehicles (Jezebel, The Letter, The Little Foxes). I guess "Mrs. Miniver" was the turning point, and then the saintly female nonentities of "Ben Hur," a flick that did all to well garnering Oscars...

Thanks for introducing me to an unknown film. Seven Oscar nominations, strong cast, and yet it remains unheralded. I wonder if the local video stores will carry it? If so, I'll be renting it thanks to your recommendation.
