Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
"Duel" is Steven Speilberg's first shot at directing and what a bad first shot it was. This movie came out in 1971 and I believe it went straight to video. No surprise there, since it was complete trash. I could be wrong though, maybe it was in theatres. I don't know for sure since I wasn't alive back then. While I am not a fan of any movies Speilberg has made, I was curious to watch this movie since my retarded brother recomended I see it. He bought it on DVD today and wasted 14 bucks on it. It's a very short movie, only an hour and half but it seems like it goes on for an eternity. Yawn, yawn, and more yawn
I'll watch any movie for free since I'm a big movie buff and I love watching them but I just wasted 90 minutes of my life watching this movie. So, onto the plot and characters. "Duel" stars actor Dennis Weaver as the protagonist; innocent, frightened and confused. I forget his first name in the movie, but his last name is Mann. And, then there is the insane psychotic truck driver who keeps following Mann and trying to kill him. Mann is a traveling salesman on his way to secure a business account, I believe. However, as he is driving, this big 18 wheeler truck comes out of nowhere on the road and just decides to pick on Mann in his 1970 bright orange plymouth fury (I think that's what kind of car it is).
The whole time Mann is trying to lose this truck but he keeps on failing because he can't seem to lose the truck. Even though, the protagonist makes stops along the way to buy gas, get something fixed under the hood of his car, and get a quick bite to eat, the truckdriver is waiting outside for him. While Mann is eating a sandwich in some diner, he is noticing the people around him and wondering if any of the customers in the diner are the culprit who is putting his life in jeopardy by trying to kill him. Finally, Mann gets himself into more trouble by assuming one of the innocent customers is the truckdriver and picks a fight with him. The customer gets mad and leaves and then finally the cook in the diner tells Mann he better leave also. So, Mann leaves and the game of cat and dog continue.
The truckdriver keeps trying to kill him and then finally Mann is driving in front of the truck and is coming to a cliff. He speeds up and jumps out of his car and hits the ground to safety. Meanwhile, the truck is behind the car and the truckdriver plummets off the cliff and falls to his death. Mann is alive and safe and is sitting by the cliff. The end. Blah blah blah. I felt so cheated after watching this because I expected more. I wanted to find out why this truckdriver decided to do this and who he was. But, I guess Speilberg just wanted to show off his directing skills and create a movie with bad suspense scenes in it just to get his claim to fame. I hate his movies and I hate him as a director. I'm also surprised that I am the only person who gave this movie a bad review. Is everyone else blind? Were we watching the same movies?
Damn You Speilberg!!!!!
