SplashYa's Full Review: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
"ET The Extra-Terrestrial," known as Steven Spielberg's first "small film," has become a modern classic. It was the summer of 1982 when this movie was released. I remember going to the movie theater when I was 8 years old to see it. And once it was released on video I watched it countless times. Now, almost 20 years later I still love this movie. I recently sat and watched it for the first time with my 5 year old daughter and my 3 year old son. At first I thought my 3 year old would be afraid of ET, but he wasn't, he adored him. They fell in love with the movie, and we watch it almost everyday. They wants ET toys now for Christmas, but I don't think Toys-R-Us has them in stock anymore..lol.
"ET" follows the warmly personal story of the magical friendship of 10-year-old boy, Elliott (Henry Thomas), and an abandoned being from another world who seeks the youngster's protection.
ET is a three-foot-tall alien who is left behind by his landing party after humans discover their nocturnal plant-gathering mission. Alone and frightened, the he approaches the home of single parent Mary (Dee Wallace) and her three children, Elliott, teenaged Michael (Robert Macnaughton) and four-year-old Gertie (Drew Barrymore).
After Elliott surprises the alien in the family's woodshed, the boy senses that the stumpy "goblin" needs his help and guidance. Elliott hides ET in his closet, playing with him and learning to communicate with simple physical signals. Eventually Elliott reveals his new friend to his brother and sister. Although they are initially frightened, they too keep ET a secret from the outside world.
Elliott and ET form a telepathic bond, which you first realize in a scene in which the alien's first experience with alcohol is transmitted to a confused Elliott, who starts weaving about his classroom without knowing why. Though ET is fascinated with his new surroundings, he wants to return home. With the children's help, he constructs a primitive communications beacon and signals his spaceship after leaving the house for the first time on Halloween night. But ET weakens and is felled by disease before the night is over. At the same time, government researchers locate him in Elliott's house using a bugging device, and attempt to save his life with Earthly medicine.
A heartbroken Elliott watches his friend deteriorate, knowing that the government researchers that surround ET only plan to "carve up" ET in the name of science. But ET regenerates himself, and, with the children's help, returns to the forest and a waiting spaceship. Clutching a pot of flowers given to him by Gertie, ET hugs Elliott and returns to his distant galaxy.
This review does reveal a lot of details about the movie, but there is still so much to see. I can't imagine that there is an adult that has not seen this movie, but in case you are one of those few I HIGHLY recommend you see it. This movie still makes me teary eyed even after almost 20 years. This is a movie your kids will love. I am hoping to keep the tradition of this movie in my family for many years to come.
