Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it. - Ferris Bueller
A better quote I really have never found. That quote will go down in history as my favorite and this movie is a classic. I first saw it in the theater, twice. Hmm, shows my age doesn't it? LOL.
The movie starts with a Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) who is about to graduate from high school. He seems more mature then his years by the way he thinks yet does things typical teenagers would do: skip school.
Then we have his best friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) who always thinks he is sick, won't dare go against his father, and has the feeling his father loves his car more than he does his son.
Also we have Ferris' girlfriend, Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) who is in love with Ferris' and wants to marry him. She has the best of both worlds. Ferris is a little bit bad boy but with squeaky clean looks.
Then comes Ferris' sister, Jean Bueller (Jennifer Grey). She hates her brother because he is always getting away with things and she never does. In the end though she helps him to not get caught. More on my thoughts why she did this later.
This movie really made me want to go back and live my teen years over again. The funny thing is I was a teen when this movie came out. I came close to doing some things like Ferris Bueller but with no where near the amount of coolness. *grin* I didn't ever get caught though.
In the movie, Ferris convinces Cameron they need to take his father's car, a restored 1961 Ferrari, 250 GT, out for the day. Cameron is very "No Way" about it because his father loves that car more than anything, even Cameron. His father also keeps a record of the mileage.
Well they do take the car and then get Sloane out of school. Ferris poses as her father and they are successful. When Ferris and Sloane reach the front steps of the school he says: "Do you have a kiss for daddy?"
That would not have been as funny if Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), Dean of Students was not watching. He didn't even get suspicious! He just muttered: "Close family."
So together the three of them start off on their adventure.
One of my favorite points is when they go into a restaurant that is by reservation only. Ferris is able to get a look at the reservation list and then passes himself off as Abe Froman, The sausage king of Chicago.
Another one they come upon a parade. Ferris' hops on one of the floats and starts singing. It is hysterical. I enjoyed this part because it made me wish I had more bravado in high school to do something like that. Oh sure, I did a few wild things but not many and not nearly often enough.
I also love the part they show from inside the school during roll call. The economics teacher, Ben Stein is beautiful in this roll. It was the role that made him famous. His monotonous drone of "Anyone, Anyone" made me nearly burst into tears I was laughing so hard. I still enjoy him now on several commercials, most notably the Clear Eyes commercials. *Wow*
Also when he is talking it reminded me of one teacher I had when I was in school. He was so boring and that drone. Ugh a sedative would have had the same effect as listening to that for 30 minutes or more, especially on a beautiful day.
Another favorite is when Jean Bueller gets arrested and her mother has to bail her out. We then are in a police station and so is this guy who was arrested for drugs. Him and Jean are sitting on a couch, and a nice couch at that. Now, what police station you've ever been too has a nice couch? LOL.
Anyway, the guy at the police station (Charlie Sheen) starts talking to Jean. He wants to know why she is there and what has her so upset. In the exchange that follows he points out that Jean's problem with never getting away with what her brother does lies with her.
Then he says: "I know who you should talk to" and Jean replies: "If you say Ferris Beuller you'll lose a *edited*"
And the guy says: "Oh, you know him?"
Well when Jean's mom comes out from talking the with the officer she finds Jean kissing the druggie guy very deeply. Man, first she kisses Charlie Sheen and then Patrick Swayze, how lucky is that?
Anyway, at the end of the movie Ferris is caught by Rooney on the back steps. Jean is just inside the back door listening to what Rooney has to say. At the point when Rooney tells Ferris he can look forward to another year of high school is when Jean opens the door.
My thoughts on this is she didn't want her brother in that school for one more year and that is why she helped him. I loved it when she also informed Rooney that he had left his wallet on the kitchen floor when he broke in earlier.
One last point I would like to make even though this review is already quite long. In the end when Ferris is racing home we can surmise it is around 6 P.M. because his father had said he would be home at 6 P.M. sharp and Ferris is seen running next to his father's car on the way back to the house.
So then why after Rooney is walking down the street, upset that Ferris got away clean yet again, does a school bus full of kids pull up and the bus driver offers to give him a lift?
What school is sending young kids home at 6 P.M.? I guess I won't ever move my family to Chicago if that is how they run things there. I would have gone mad being in school until 6 P.M. I just put it down to a minor flaw in the movie.
One of the best parts is the very end and not because I didn't like this movie. I won't say why because I don't want to spoil it but it is right after the credits have rolled. It made me glad when I saw it in the theater that I am the type to hang around until the credits were all done or I might have missed it.
