I'm always skeptical of a film where an actor direct's himself. But Clint Eastwood has pulled it off before. And as a fan of Sci-Fi and Action flicks, the premise here sounded too good to be true. So I HAD to see it!
Well, the premise WAS too good to be true.
The idea of the Russians having a secret, super powerful, hi-tech plane is great. But having thought control during the cold war era is too much.
The idea of a top agent being sent to steal it sounds very 'James Bond'. But having top brass decide that the best person for the job is a burned out Vietnam vet is illogical.
But even these inconsistencies can be overlooked in a decent action flick with decent effects. This was neither.
The first time I saw the movie, I fell asleep half way through it! This movie is so slow to develop that, the second time I watched it (I really wanted to like it!), I had to force myself to stay awake until about 3/4 of the way into it. Then it finally picked up and the last half hour was pretty good.
A good editing job, taking about an hour out of it, would have made it much more watchable. What it really needed though was a complete re-write. Make it a Navy Seal operation set about 10 years into the future with lots of action and this could have been a good movie. As it is, only die hard Eastwood fans should even bother.
