Pros:Eccentric French filmmaking taken to the limit
Cons:Eccentric French filmmaking taken to the limit
The Bottom Line: If you're working your way through the complete output of Jean Luc Godard then by all means see it - It's by no means a film a clef though.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

The preset categorisation options following this review were certainly not designed for this kind of film...

Anyway, this is an odd film to say the least from the creator of the 1960s masterpiece 'A bout de Souffle' (Breathless - US/UK title).
- The story line includes the director as himself with occasional appearances throughout the film. Other subplots include the story of Carmen retold in modern Paris but with a bank robbery and later the planning of a kidnapping in a hotel as the main focal points. There are obvious references back to the Bizet opera of the same name, including cuts of a string quartet practising the very music - Yet this doesn't mix in with the rest of the story line as such until the end (despite lending musical background to some scenes) - And even then it seems without consequence.
More than your average amount of gratuitous nudity than would be expected in a French film of this character. To a certain extent it highlights the sexual passion of the two protagonists yet at times it is downright pointless and over the top exhibitionism.
All in all it is an odd assemblage of scenes, moods, sounds and events - Best taken with a large, very large, G&T I should think.
