This Movie was Written by, Directed by and has Music by “JOHN CARPENTER”. This is a follow up to his big hit horror film “HALLOWEEN”. He also has a Cameo as a Church Assistant named Bennett at the very beginning of the Movie. The Movie stars “ADRIENNE BARBEAU” as Stevie Wayne who owns and operates KAB Radio 1340AM inside a on land Lighthouse. This was her very 1st starring role after playing small parts in 8 previous Movies. She has also starred in “DOUBLE CROSSED”, “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK” and “SWAMP THING”. “JAMIE LEE CURTIS” plays Elizabeth Solley a hitchhiker that decides to stay in Antonio Bay for a while. She has starred in “HALLOWEEN”, “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK” and “A FISH CALLED WANDA”. City Councilwoman Kathy Williams is played by Jamie’s real life Mother “JANET LEIGH”. She has also starred in “PSYCHO”, “BYE BYE BIRDIE” and “TOUCH OF EVIL”. The part of Nick Castle is played by “TOM AKINS”. He has also starred in “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK”, “HALLOWEEN 3: SEASON OF THE WITCH” and “LETHAL WEAPON”. The 3rd Halloween Movie had nothing to do with the entire series and JOHN CARPENTER went back to his original story line in HALLOWEEN 4. “HAL HOLBROOK” plays Father Malone. He has also been in “UNDER SIEGE”, “CREEPSHOW” and “THE FIRM”. Weatherman Dan O’Bannon is played by “CHARLEY CYPHERS”. He has previously been in “HALLOWEEN”, “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK” and “DEATH WISH 2” . “JOHN HOUSEMAN” plays and old Fisherman Storyteller named Mr. Machen. He has also been in “ROLLERBALL”, “GHOST STORY” and “THE PAPER CHASE”. Stevie’s son Andy Wayne is played by “TY MITCHELL”. He only ever appeared in two other films “HALLOWEEN 2” and “THE KID WITH THE BROKEN HALO”.
PLOT:
Antonio Bay is a small fishing village in the upper Northeast of North America. They are preparing to celebrate their 100 years of existence. What they are not aware of is their celebration is about to be upset by a giant Fog bank and ghosts of dead fisherman from 100 years before. The story unfolds as Mr. Machen and a group of the town’s children are sitting around a campfire near the shore. It is 11:55 PM on April 21st and he is about to tell them the story of the shipwreck that happened 100 years ago. He tells them about the Clipper ship named the “ELIZABETH DANE” and it’s crew of men. They are out to sea making their way back home and a large Fog bank engulfs them. They see a large light and sail toward it. It is a bonfire on shore and they steer toward it and into the rocks. The ship sinks to the bottom and all on board are killed. The Fog lifts and disappears as quickly as it appeared. He continues his story and tells the kids that Fishermen for many years have told this story and if the Fog ever returns the Ghosts of these dead men will return as well to exact their bloody revenge.
MAIN STORY:
Next we hear Stevie on a radio giving the time as Midnight and that she will be on the air until 1AM. She explains it is a full Moon out and that the town is 100 years old today. We then see Father Malone saying goodnight to his assistant Bennett who was sweeping the floor of the church. Father Malone is drinking some wine and gets up from the table when he here’s a strange sound. All of a sudden a large stone breaks off the side of the wall and falls onto the table where he was sitting. He reaches into the hole and pulls out a book and opens it up. The first page has written on it “JOURNAL OF FATHER PATRICK MALONE 1880”. We find out later that he is his great-grandfather. All throughout the town strange things are occurring. Pay phones are ringing wildly, parked cars have their horns start blowing and their headlights come on. A hose on a Gas pump falls off and starts pumping gas as a car lift inside rises a car to the roof.
We see Elizabeth hitchhiking and is picked up by Nick. As they are driving and talking all the windows in his truck break out for no reason. Stevie at the Lighthouse gets a phone call from her friend Dan who tells her of a Fog Bank moving toward a ship at sea named the “SEAGRASS”. She gets on the radio to warn them and it just so happens they are listening to her right then and look out the window to see the Fog begin to engulf their ship. They also see a very big ship pull up next to theirs and see figures standing on it’s deck with something in their hands. We then see the crew of the “SEAGRASS” murdered one by one by swords, picks and strangulation. The Fog then decides to change direction and head inland. We see Elizabeth and Nick in bed together talking and then hear a knock on his door. We can see a shadow outside the glass door as Nick puts on his pants and reaches for the doorknob the clock strikes 1AM. He unlocks the door, looks outside and the Fog and the mysterious figure are both gone.
City Councilwoman Kathy and her associate go to the Church to ask Father Malone if he is going to give the benediction for that night’s celebration in town. He tells them about the Journal he found and reads some of it to them. It talks about a Leper Colony that was 1 mile away and that a group of 6 men including his great-grandfather is planing to kill a man named Blake and his crew on a ship. They want to steal their gold to help build the Church they are in now. They set a bonfire on the beach on purpose to draw them into the rocks. The Fog was just a coincidence and helped them with their plan. After the ship sank they went back out the next day and salvaged the gold. Father Malone tells Kathy that the town has been living a lie for the last 100 years and they would be celebrating murders and he wanted no part of it. Kathy and her assistant leave the church. Stevie’s son Andy is going out to fish when he spies something shining on the rocks. He reaches down to pick up what seems to be a Gold Doubloon. The waves wash over it and as the water disappears the coin has changed into a broken sign that says “DANE”. He then takes it back to his Mom who is sleeping and explains to her how he found it.
It is now almost 6PM and Stevie is walking into the lighthouse with the broken sign and a tape player listening to radio promos of her station ID’s. She lays the board on top of a shelf just above the tape player. She turns away and the sign changes it’s wording and starts dripping some kind of liquid that oozes into the tape player and then we hear strange voices talking to each other. She turns around and the board, tape player and everything catch on fire, she grabs her extinguisher and puts it out and the board changes back. She looks again real close and there is no indication of any liquid, a fire or any damage at all and the tape player is playing properly again.
It’s now dark and all the people are sitting in the town’s square listening to different speeches. The Fog is slowing heading into shore once again. Dan call’s Stevie and tells her about the Fog coming in from sea once again. She tries to warn him to beware of the Fog and he laughs it off. He then turns and sees a bright light at his main window and tells her he has to check it out and lays down the phone. She yells into the phone to not go to the door. He opens the door and turns around to yell across the room to her on the phone that it must be someone playing a trick on him. He is then strangled to death by a ghostlike figure in the mist. As the townspeople are lighting candles for a special ceremony the fog enters the power station and all the electricity is shut down. Stevie is able to get her Emergency generator started and tries to send out a warning over the air about the dangers of the fog. She pleads for someone to save her son Andy staying with a baby-sitter. Nick and Elizabeth turn around and head for her house as it is also engulfed with the fog. The baby-sitter sends Andy to his room and goes to the door to answer it and is killed. Nick breaks the window in the bedroom and pulls Andy free as one of the ghosts is breaking into the room.
Stevie can see the fog rolling up street after street and warns everybody to drive to the Church for safety. Nick, Elizabeth and Any pull up to the church the same time as Kathy and her assistant and they all run inside. Father Malone gets the journal and continues to read more from it to them all. He believes they want revenge on the ancestors of the 6 who killed them and that he would be next. He then discovers that the gold they had taken from the ship was melted into the church’s cross. He picks it up and walks into the main part of the church. The fog and the ghosts had entered into the rear of the church and they now face Father Malone. He yells at them “Blake I Have Your Gold” . The fog has also crept into the lighthouse and slowly up the spiral staircase. Stevie has crawled out and up onto the roof of the lighthouse as high as she can get. Father Malone hands the gold cross to the ghosts and says “Take Me”. The cross starts to glow bright white and Father Malone falls to the floor. The Ghosts, the cross and the Fog is gone as fast as it came. A Ghost is just about to stab Stevie at the same time but also mysteriously disappears as the fog slowly sweeps away. Father Malone is then seen standing alone between the pews asking out loud “Why Not 6 Blake, Why Not Me?”. The Fog and the Ghosts suddenly reappear before him and he is killed.
JAG’S FINAL THOUGHTS:
This Movie was originally released in 1979. I saw it when it came out and liked it very much. I like most Horror Movies in general and always like John Carpenter Films. I own a ton of his Movies on Video. Including the entire HALLOWEEN series, “ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK”, “THE THING”, “THEY LIVE”, “ESCAPE FROM L.A.”, “VAMPIRES” and “CHRISTINE” just to name a few. I also like Jamie Lee Curtis a lot and own a lot of her Movies on Video also. I own the Movies mentioned in my Intro. section that she has been in as well as "VIRUS”, “HOUSE ARREST”, “MY GIRL & MY GIRL 2”, “BLUE STEEL” , “PROM NIGHT” , “TRADING PLACES” and my favorite of hers’ “TRUE LIES” just to name a few. I had been looking for this Movie on Video for 6 years. It went out of circulation when I first started my very big, extensive Video collection and have waited for it ever since. I had my Email address on at least 3 Video sites set as a mail notification when it became available again. The day before it was available again I received an Email notification from BIGSTAR.com and ordered it that day and paid extra for rush delivery. I got it in 3 days and was happy as a little kid getting his 1st bike. It has taken me over a month and a half to finally sit down to do my review on it. I really wasn’t sure how many people would want to read a review of a very old movie or not. I read comments on the great Movie Reviewers on some of their old movies that they review and the comments seem to indicate that there just might me a few people interested. I am willing to review more movies on video in the future if I get enough people that seem interested enough to read about them. The Music to this Movie is very spooky but cool and I think I will be looking for the Soundtrack to add to my collection.
