One of The First Slasher Flicks
Written: Feb 16, 2001
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Tense finale, Betsy Palmer, good special
effects
Cons:not terribly involving, kinda slow and
boring
The Bottom Line: It's pretty good and fun to watch, but isn't great art.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Friday the 13TH was released in 1980 and was huge hit with
audiences around the country. Most critics were harsh and
unkind to this movie saying it was just an exercise in teen
bloodletting, sex, and stupidity. Partly, they are correct
but there is a little more to Friday the 13TH than initially
is found in teen horror flicks.
Friday the 13TH starts with two teens being murdered by an
unseen maniac. Flash forward to present day and a group of
teens converge on Camp Crystal Lake (the scene of the grisly
murders) to fix it up and reopen it but another (or the same) maniac watches from affair and proceeds to kill of the
counselors one by one until only virginal Alice is left to
fend off the killer alone.
Not a whole lot of plot going on here, but there is some to
be sure. In actuality, the plot exists to hang the many
gory murders on: decapitation, impalement, cut throats and
an axe in the face. Special effect wiz Tom Savini did the
outstanding FX work on this movie and they are great, but
some may now look hokey compared to those is Scream, ect...
Those who don't like gory and violent films should beware of
this one: it's incredibly brutal and gory, and is sure to offend some put off by those types of films. Back in 1980,
the producers had to trim out some very violent shots to get
the "R" rating instead of the vile "X". Among the deleted
shots were more blood flowing from wounds, longer glimpses of the dead corpses, and the decapitation at the end of the
film. There has at the present never been a totally uncut
version released in the USA.
I recommend Friday the 13TH to all the horror buffs out there, but not so much to the casual viewer. It's much to
gory for a mainstream viewer, but horror fans will jump for
joy at the bloodflow. Not too much story, but horror fans
usually don't mind. So see it, but it's not a really good
movie, but you can get some enjoyment from it in the right
frame of mind.
Friday the 13TH is Rated R for strong horror violence and
gore, language and sexuality, and for drug use and brief
nudity.
