infielderx's Full Review: Friday the 13th - Part 1
Friday the 13th was my second horror movie when I was young, just behind "Parasite" (which contained the first nudity I'd ever seen in film). Thus was the beginning of my infatuation with horror films, good and bad. Looking back, this one would have to fall somewhere in the middle, but it at least was the one that most new films rip off from (well, I'd better give a nod to Hitchcock's "Psycho" too).
Wouldn't you know it, camp counselors are dropping like flies at Camp Crystal Lake, a un-inviting borderline swampish, oversized pond surrounded by eerie forest (a.k.a Camp Blood). It seems that years ago, some of them were necking instead of doing their duty as bodyguards, the result being one of the kids drowns. We don't find this out until later in the film. All we know is that because of the camera angles used, the killer is faceless and their identity unknown.
The action heats up as the counselors retreat to their quarters during a thunderstorm. Some decide to play strip poker, and some decide to shower together. As we all know from slasher films, the killers don't take kindly to non-virgins. Any-who, Kevin Bacon (his 1st film) and his buddies drop one by one due to sharp objects. The mood and atmosphere of the film is set quite nicely, but unfortunately the acting and the dialogue is a bit anemic. However, for a 10 year old, this movie can be quite frightening. The dark becomes more evil and closed doors better stay closed. I will not give away the ending, but suffice it to say that if you're new to the slasher genre, I would say put down your drinks else risk spilling it on yourself.
