Pros: Teens dropping like flies and nice FX makeup for Jason.
Cons: 88 mins that could have been dedicated to a nap
Okay campers it gets a bit zany there but what say we all gather round and hang out at Crystal Lake. What’s the worst that could happen? So get your bong, girl and some Schlitz and let’s who gets offed first. This Friday the 13thPart 7: A New Blood.
There’s a lengend of spoilers that exist in these woods
Director John Carl Buechler (Bride of Re-Animator, Halloween 4, Troll and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and writer Daryl Haney (Xtro 3: Watch the Skies, Life Among the Cannibals and Mockingbird Don’t Sing) strive to get away from the Tommy Jarvis/Jason Vorhees storyline and off in a different direction. Enter the Shepard family. John and Amanda are having a drag out fight and their daughter Tina doesn’t want to see Daddy hit Mommy again but instead of Denis Leary’s baseball bat story of Suicide Kings; Tina telekinetically drops the boat dock Daddy is on and sinks him to his watery grave. So it has been seven years since Tommy Jarvis tricked and trapped Jason in the water hopefully trapping him forever…but we all know how that works. Tina (Lar Park- Lincoln of Knots Landing, House II, Children of the Night) is now grown to a troubled teen and is being helped by Dr. Crews (Terry Kiser of Lois and Clark, Weekend at Bernie’s 1 and 2) and her devoted mother Amanda(Susan Blu of The Real Ghostbusters, BraveStarr, Jem, and Transformers).
Tina returns to the house of her childhood, filled with guilt attempts to raise her father from the depths of the lake only to accidentally free Jason from his sunken tomb and allow him to go back to his killing spree ways. As luck would have it, next door to Tina is a mass conglomerate of teenies boozing, smoking, toking and probably a little premarital sex. Just a buffet of carnage for our favorite hockey masked maniac and maybe even some strays will wander into his clutches. Unbeknownst to our undead slayer of teens, that Tina is backed in a corner and by God she means business. So with a little object on wire, shutter speed slowed down to make almost stop animation and some plucky spirit, Tina lashes out at Jason in a desperate attempt to save her, family and friends. Its psycho vs physic, telekinesis vs terror and no one know what will be the outcome.
This is the first appearance of Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan, Friday the 13th Part 9: Jason Goes To Hell, Jason X, Hatchet 1 and 2) as Jason Vorhees. The only stuntman playing the lead character 4 times in a row Kane did his own stunts while fully in costume and Lar Park- Lincoln is also credited with doing several stunts as well. So if you like gore (and it really is tamer than say Saw or Hostel), teens dead with unusual props and looking at a sleeping bag in a different light then this flick is for you. I sense some of you may want something a bit more compelling and exciting, to that I answer go read a book. This is silly movie night material people.
