Some city folk move out in the country in Funny Farm. No it is not about farming! Think about it and think who is in this movie...Funny Farm Chevy Chase...ah ha! A nutty crazy comedy type of film! If Chevy Chase is in a movie, I know that it will make me laugh! Add in some awfully hilarious animals making appearances, a dead man buried in the garden, a sheriff who travels by Taxi, plus more hijinks and you get this awesome movie with a great story to it! I have no idea what you know or don't know so if you don't want to be spoiled a little, click away now or read with your eyes closed...whichever suits you. Now for the rest of the story, well not giving it ALL away...
Chevy Chase plays Andy Farmer, the sportswriter who moves into a small city to write his first novel. His wife Elizabeth is played by Madolyn Smith-Osborne. Most of the action is centered on this couple in their new home, everything else happens to them. Someone in their family must have broken a mirror or three as bad luck seems to be attracted to them! First the moving van shows up a day later, they crashed through the bridge. Andy and Elizabeth are starving but wait for the moving van to show up before going anywhere, they sleep on the floor, hungry the first night. Elizabeth finds a coffin with a dead body in it in the garden as she gets ready to plant. When they call the sheriff, they are told to insert coins into the phone which is not a pay phone. Then they are expected to pay for the funeral of the dead guy who was buried in their yard. Andy buys a dog and the dog promptly runs away. His wife buys him a second dog who barely moves. Andy tries to write on his novel but between the crazy mailman honking his horn and the bird tweeting away each day, he barely writes much at all. What he does write is not that great. It is one mishap after another. Andy goes fishing in the lake by the house only to catch a huge snake. The townspeople are not that friendly and many outright hate Andy. Some kids keep removing road signs causing all kinds of problems. Will Andy ever get finished with his novel? Will Andy and Elizabeth decide the country life is not for them? What is Elizabeth doing in secret behind Andy's back?
The country home seems perfect with ducks on the lake, birds singing, shade trees, dirt roads, so calm and peaceful. They are very happy with it until all of the problems start happening. Chevy Chase and the animals were the most hilarious parts for me. The way he reacted to the different problems and the way the dog would run through the yard never stopping plus other animals' making a brief appearance. It really reminds me of the story about the man who moved to a place where it snowed, then discovered that living in a house where it snows a lot may not be the happiest place to live. At first he enjoyed the snowflakes and then ended up hating all of the shoveling. This movie may not have you busting out laughing but I'll bet that you crack a few smiles during it! A fun movie the whole family can enjoy!
