Great review. I thought this film was a bloated attempt to turn an all too human man into a saint-that's where the cartoonishness lies. You get a glimpse of Ghandi the man but he had far more "warts" than the film let on. I hate it when that happens.

I think I'll have to check this movie out again. It must've bored me too if I can't remember watching it! Excellent job.

Thank you, Alex, for your kind appraisal and fine sense of humor. I do not aspire to butcher sacred cows, per se -- I just calls em like I sees em. Gandhi was a crashing bore and could have been so much better.
There are highly acclaimed films that actually deserve their reputations but by and large the AMPAS is not a good bellwether of whether or not a film deserves acclaim. For just one example: just look at The Devil and Daniel Webster or anything starring Walter Huston and see where it ranks on the Top 100 of All Time. Very revealing as to the taste arbiters at the Academy.
Your bud,
George

Dear George: I could not agree with you more on this assessment of GANDHI. The film is for much of its length a creaking bore, which is a shame, considering its subject.
Thinking of the many reviews that I have read by you, this one may be your finest. You should go after Sacred Cows more often!
Regards.

I love history. I hate it when movies play with facts and then pawn it off as truth. Itīs just lazyness or lack of talent. Fabrications and deletions are unneeded, especially with Gandhi.
Thanks for the info. Iīll find a good book.

You know, Jack, you've got such a good feel for context in that you know off the top of your head that Gandhi went up against Tootsie and The Verdict and won. A travesty, I wholeheartedly agree. Either of the two films were far more meaningful and entertaining to me than Gandhi. The only thing about Gandhi is that he was a real person but Attenborough made him almost a cartoon character due to poor focus.
Thanks as always for your pertinent insight, bud!
