We aren't in Kansas anymore? .... seriously Dean, you haven't spent enough time on this site yet if you don't think we are ... grin ...
Ah, Oz, couldn't done that one just for the "I'm melting, I'm melting" line alone or "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too". See if you can guess who my favorite character was - smile
Thanks for the fun, I purposely saved this one for last

At last, the quote comes out (Reply to this comment)
by dbcint
This W/O is starting to see some of the best lines in cinema history come out, and I'm surprised no-one jumped on this earlier. Next thing you know, someone will submit a review of "The Wizard Of Oz" with "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore".
Loved the way you presented this quote too - hilarious.
Thanks for all the entries,
Dean.

I'm with you Gavia, the work that they were able to do, back in these times, is just incredible to think about or imagine today. True movie making skills and what making a movie was all about.
Great scene you described
Thanks again

don't fret Steve, I've never made it all the way thru Casablanca myself. Just didn't ring any bells for me and I generally like Bogart as well.
There are a lot of old classics I've never visited, maybe some day
Thanks

Among the best--- (Reply to this comment)
by gaviidae
---of ALL time, IMHO! I've watched it at least ten times over the years, and been entertained and impressed every time.
Most striking scene, in my opinion:
The scene of Scarlett helping with the wounded, as the camera backs away revealing how many there are, backing further and further until see the tattered Confederate flag with a MASS of wounded and dieing below. What makes it so technically amazing is they did it BEFORE there were zoom lenses! The camera was physically backed upward and away to produce that shot. Inspired!
Great movie and an excellent review!

Gavia

I have never seen Gone With the Wind or Casablanca yet. I know, I know . . . how dare I not watch a classic movie! And Humphrey Bogart is one of my favorite actors - go figure!
Great review!

Re: box office (Reply to this comment)

Strange, several people have noted that it wasn't that great of a movie, yet it is the champion - allowing for inflation. Of course, allowing for inflation, the movie (Cameron) Titanic cost more to make than the original ship cost to build.
I keep wondering what brings people back. The performances, the music, what?
Thanks Stephen

box office (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
A few weeks back the Wall Street Journal had an article on highest grossing movies, and reported that in inflation-adjusted (constant) dollars, GWTW was the all-time champion. It has many memorable performances, but I'm not at all sure that it is a good movie. But a box-office blockbuster it definitely was.

Re: Cannot believe (Reply to this comment)

truth be told, ole Scarlett was probably a bigger cad than Rhett in this movie but there was just something about her fiery character. Of course, she was a selfish wench and treated her family and friends as well as those that served her like trash.
Hard to believe it has been this long isn't it?
Thanks Lorace

Cannot believe (Reply to this comment)

this was made 65 years ago. It seems so timeless.
But no matter how many times I've seen it, I've always detested Scarlett and loved Rhett and Olivia. I was frustrated, just like others have mentioned here.
Loved your review, of course.

always felt the same way myself about Casablanca, never did understand the love for that pic. But as they say ... different strokes, etc.
Of course, I've always held that the original King Kong was one of the greatest pieces of cinema to ever come out of Hollywood, so there ya go.
Thanks

Frankly, Susi, (Reply to this comment)

I've never given a damn about this picture. The first time I saw it, at a revival showing, I was non-plussed that it had such a reputation. Ponderous, and celebrating really a system of colonial servitude!
But you made a good case it.
Congratulations.

I didn't care for this movie... (Reply to this comment)
by agentunderfire
Scarlett was annoying and Rhett was a cad. She was spoiled and blind. Who would go for Ashley when Rhett was standing right in front of her? (Other than her "I-can't-have-him-so-I-want-him" thing of Scarlett's)And why would Rhett want her anyway?
Guess it doesn't matter. Great review anyway.

As a child of the south, I will always cherish Gone With The Wind. It's a great story with unforgettable characters, a moving musical score, and, of course, those famous lines you mentioned. Good job on the review. Sheila
