Grease does not impress me at all in the movie form. While the soundtrack is really wonderful and I have enjoyed it for many years, this is the first time that I actually sat here and watched the actual movie from start to finish.
There are several things about this movie I really do not like. First of all, there's too much drinking, smoking and talking about sex in it. Now that may be acceptable in pretty much all forms of adult movies, but this is supposed to be set in a high school environment. I would hate to think that my son would be going to school in this kind of environment. Sure, the story's set in the 50/60's era, but the idea of so much of this movie being taken up by this really repulses me.
Second, the interaction between Sandy and Danny is really interesting, but I find it really saddening that both of these characters feel that they have to be something they are not. Sure it was nice during their summer love situation, because they fell in love with the persons they really were. But school seems to have shown Sandy what the "real" Danny is like with his cocky, smart aleck behavior which really turns any decent woman off.
Finally, the movie is absolutely boring to me. I mean it. This is an absolutely boring movie. Perhaps I feel that way because I am repulsed by the other things, that the movie seems to have no substance without those scenes!
On a better note, I love the music from this movie. I would buy the soundtrack and because I love John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. So, I suppose if I would turn the video display off and just would have played the music, I would have been much happier.
I really believe there are much better musicals which have been adapted to screen which have a better overall impact upon the viewers than Grease does. (Music Man, Brigadoon)
Therefore, I can not recommend this movie to anyone. I do not like it and will stick to listening to my favorite songs from the soundtrack individually.
This film adaptation of GREASE is the zippy smash hit translation from the Broadway musical tribute to the fabulous 1950s. As a new school year begins...More at Family Video
