| captaind's Full Review: Gulliver's Travels |
|
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
Gullivers Travels is, as I am sure you already know, an all-time classic novel by Jonathon Swift, and is one of the sharpest satirical novels ever written. There have been many film / TV versions, few of which have adhered closely to the original storyline. On a compilation we got recently for a bargain basement price, I came across this version. As far as following Swifts overall storyline goes you can forget it, but that doesnt stop it from being an enjoyable film.
Featuring Richard Harris (the few other actors in the film have such short parts that theyre really not worth mentioning), who kids may recognise from the recent Harry Potter films, this version of Gullivers Travels is notable for being one of the first films to ever mix live action and animation. The storyline revolves almost entirely around Gullivers adventures in Lilliput, the tiny land full of tiny people, where two empires wage bloody war over which end a boiled egg ought to be broken. Im sure you know the basic story Gulliver gets shipwrecked on Lilliput, is taken captive by its inhabitants who think hes a monster (or at least a giant), and slowly tries to gain their confidence and then
nope, Im not going to tell you any more. (Theres always someone ready to shoot me down for including spoilers
.)
For the time (1977 this film is as old as I am!), the animation is quite good, and the way Harris interacts with his drawn buddies is very good most of the time. The characters are all extremely eccentric from the Emperor who loves his food more than anything else to the strange-looking Diplomatic Minister who helps Gulliver, to the Naval Commander who struck me as a cross between Captain Pugwash and Tintins Captain Haddock! Every character here is larger than life, but since theyre cartoon characters this works. The first sequence in Lilliput, when a three man patrol comes across Gullivers inert body on the beach following his shipwreck, sets the stage for the rest of the film to follow theyre like the Three Stooges, only perhaps worse!
The upshot of the way the animated characters are portrayed is that Harris is forced to play the entire film completely straight he may have been the first ever human foil for a bunch of cartoon characters. But the humour throughout the movie works brilliantly once Id got over the initial shock of it being nothing like I thought it was going to be, I enjoyed watching Gullivers Travels immensely. Its a mixture of surrealism and slapstick, with just a pinch of Swifts inimitable satire mixed in. When you take into account that this kind of live action / animation had very rarely been done before, it stands as quite an impressive achievement. Its certainly still enjoyable for either children or adults currently going through their second childhood.
But if I like it so much then why, you ask (you may not know you ask this but take my word for it, you do ask), have I not given it 5 stars? Theres one simple reason for this the songs. The theme tune gave me a headache and sprung up unbidden at several points in the film. And Richard Harris sings. The problem with this is that Richard Harris cannot sing. Its horrible definitely not a high point in our Richards career!
You may have problems getting hold of this title I think your best bet is in a collection, though of course some online stores may still stock it as an individual item. If you have kids I think its well worth getting. (Ditto if you are a kid in an adults body.) Parents will also like the way Gulliver refuses to use his superior size and strength to his advantage against the Lilliputions but prefers instead to use diplomacy.
Its a nice little film, and if you can put up with the awful songs, perhaps a great one!
There were no extras on the DVD I saw it on, but there may be estras if you can get it on DVD as an standalone title.
Thanks as always to all who read / rate / comment / dont throw rotten tomatoes at me.
(The mini-series starring Ted Dansen and a whole host of stars is excellent, and is a much more authentic version of Gulliver's Travels.)

A recent live action - animation classic is Warners Bros Loony Tunes Back In Action - Brenda Fraser, Jenna Elfman, Timothy Dalton, Steve Martin, and Joan Cussak, along with all your favourite characters likes Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales... and all working together beautifully. Great stuff, very highly recommended.
Other Kiddies Movies
Good Boy - a canine agent from outer space learns the simple joy of being a pet featuring the voice talents of, among others: Matthew Broderick and Brittany Murphy a nice film and much better than I expected. (Only saw it as we got a free preview ticket!)
Finding Nemo - featuring the voice talents of Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres among others, this hilarious Pixar animated movie was one of my Top Ten Films of 2003 and joint number one in my list of Top Ten Animated Movies of All Time
Spy Kids 3D - this third film in the Spy Kids Trilogy (assuming there wont be more) is undoubtedly the weakest of the three, with a weak storyline and only cameo appearances by most of the characters that made the first film so good (especially Floop [Alan Cummings]) and the 3D isnt even that good. Saved from total obscurity by a brilliant performances by Sylvester Stallone as the baddie (yeah I know that doesnt sound likely I was more surprised than anybody, believe me).
Cool Runnings - Disney films are always a bit touch and go, but this one is hilarious and contains many good performances by a cast that, with the exception of John Candy, was (and still is) basically unknown.
Look Whos Talking Now - I was dubious about watching this film but its actually really nice and very funny in places. John Travolta and Kirsty Alley star again as the parents but the real show-stealers are the dogs, voiced by Danny DeVito and Diane Keaton.
