The restored and remastered edition of the "Guns of Navarone" shines as a great example of film making. Based on the Alistair McClain novel of the same name, we get to follow a rough and ready group of men sent on a mission to destroy the great anti-shipping guns the Nazis put in place in the Aegean. And what a story this is. After seeing it from one of the new restored videos, I realized what a gem this film is beyond the story. The background shots, the villages, the riveting characters (major and minor) brings this film to life unlike many another war film. Indeed it is an anti-war film at its heart, with the men at its heart doing all they can to "get the job done".
What makes this story so compelling is the capabilities of the actors to give us an emotional depth to their characters that was totally lacking in the written story. Plus there are added sub-plots and character interactions, especially between the saboteurs and the Germans that show us a human side of this war that is often missed in more simplistic stories of this era. And the cinematography is first class, with the countryside and village life becoming an integral part of the story that helps the viewer become absorbed in it totally. By the time your done watching you will really wish that there was an island of Navarone and such basically good people as we are shown in this film.
I never did get to see this at the theaters as I was far too young when the film was released. Now that the colors have been brought back to their original splendor, I hope it will be digitized and made available on DVD with duplicate tracks to show what was restored and some background on how it was done.
Another great film in this genre is "The Bridge on the River Kwai", I highly recommend it!
Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and David Niven all give outstanding performances. Pick up this video and watch it again and again... and remember what we owe to all of those who just "got the job done".
