Well, yeah, but, for sure, narly, FINISHED thats the best thing I can say about this movie.
Certainly there had to be some social comment deemed from this movie but Ill be kicked in the fanny if I can figure it out. Stay away from psycho guys in school? Watch out for the new guy in the lunchroom that pulls a gun on you and shoots it? Its ever so endearing to join the brain dead girl group that has three members named Heather and one named Veronica? Some one please clue me in.
Heather #1 is just plain nasty, spiteful and mean. Heather the cheerleader is NOT a leader but a follower and ends up trying to play the lost little girl. Heather Duke, the only one with a last name apparently, will do anything required to remain in the in crowd. That leaves Veronica, school brain child that lives on the perimeter of the group, has former friends that definitely arent IN (like Betty, had to chuckle on the Veronica & Betty reference), and really, she wants to be there but doesnt want to do what is expected of a HEATHER.
As she drools over the new stud muffin in school, J.D., she catches some flack from her Heathermates, but then again they are only interested in college boys or the football team. You know the type. Turns out old J.D. is a bit of an enigma himself. His first day in the lunchroom catches him watching the Heathers as they Heatherize the current laughing stock at school, Martha Dumptruck Dunnstock. This is right before he pulls a gun out of his pants and shoots the two jocks giving him a rough time. Sure, it was only blanks. ONLY BLANKS? And they didnt even expel the creep.
And we wonder where the kids get ideas to haul a gun off to school and wipe out the kids that ruffle their feathers. WHY WASNT THIS MOVIE PULLED AFTER THE ONSET OF SCHOOL SHOOTINGS? [OOPS
sorry, the soapbox tripped me up a minute]
Without further comment from me about the IDEA of the story, Ill continue on the analysis of the script and acting. The key players are Winona Ryder as Veronica, Christian Slater as JD, Shannen Doherty as Heather Duke and two blonde bimbos as the other Heathers.
Some refer to this as a dark comedy, or black comedy. I personally didnt see it as humorous but thats me. Slater was a high point in the movie because I dont think he took one iota of it seriously. However Ryder was her usual do-nothing self, the part wasnt nearly as good as the one in Beetlejuice if that gives you the slightest hint. Shannen Doherty is just a completely incompetent actress, in fact you cant even call her an actress. The Heathers, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker were justifiably killed in the movie.
In its defense, the movie was crisply shot with good continuity. Camera angels were clear, vocalization was good, scenery was decent. The jabs and curt one liners offered by the group of kids was certainly well done, I believe Ive heard some of these comments in the halls myself.
Directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters, Heathers would obviously appeal to the crowd that flocks to Goldmember, Stripes, Van Wilder, etc. It won the Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Award for best motion picture and the Independent Spirit Award for best first picture. The most common thread of music through the movie was Teenage Suicide, Dont Do It by Big Fun.
The DVD also carried the making-of featurette and interviews. I didnt bother with either one.
I was highly disappointed in this movie and the social significance of it.
Thanks,
Susi
