High Society is Highly Entertaining
Written: Feb 16 '01
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
High Society is the musical remake of the 1940s classic romantic comedy, Philadelphia Story. Cole Porter's music adds another level of pure pleasure to this already great story.
High Society's plot, like the original, Philadelphia Story, revolves around a classic romantic love triangle. The setting for this film is Newport, Rhode Island, in the mansions of the rich and famous. The occasion, the wedding of heiress Tracy Samantha Lord. The plot opens with Tracy's ex-husband, the wealthy playboy C.K. Dexter Haven returning home to annoy, and possibly win back his ex-wife and throw a monkey wrench into the wedding plans. Add to this mix a cool, handsome reporter, McCauley "Mike" Connor, sent to cover the nuptials for a cheap tabloid of the day, Spy Magazine, and you have the formula for a hilarious romantic triangle.
High Society brings together the crooner Bing Crosby as Dexter Haven; The beautiful and elegant Grace Kelly, as Tracy Samantha Lord, in her last role before she became Princess Grace of Monaco; and Frank Sinatra, as the rough yet gentle reporter, and her unlikely love interest, Mike Connor. This trio sings, dances and yes they act their way through this fast-paced plot, with such great Cole Porter hits as "True Love". As an added bonus, we get the legendary Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong narrating and performing, as the wedding coincides with the staging of the Newport Jazz festival.
Also featured are Celeste Holm, playing Liz, a photographer who is Mike Connor's (Sinatra) partner and perhaps love interest; and John Lund, as George Kitteridge, the stuffy, so called lower class, man of the people, and the intended Bridegroom.
Will there be a wedding? Who will Tracy marry? What did her little sister Dina see from her bedroom window on the eve of the wedding, or was it all a dream? There is enough suspense and drama still left in this musical to keep you involved right up until the closing song.
I loved High Society, and the original, Philadelphia Story. This musical remake is just another flavor of a fantastic concoction. After you see High Society, if you haven't seen it already, you must get The Philadelphia Story. It's the same romantic comedy without the music, but with the great dramatic and comedic talents of Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart. You have to see them both.
