| B_L_I_S_S's Full Review: House on Haunted Hill |
In this review i am going to give a few personal views and personal insight of the House on the Haunted Hill. I and a friend saw it in the theatres and we didn't plan on seeing it, we just choose this movie because it was the last movie showing, and since were late and we both loved the horror genre we didn't mind much. The movie started out as any modern horror movie, like a short film by some student director meant to be as the intro. It was okay tho, but i was more amazed by the non-matching credits for the actor/ice(s) that were added in "ugly". But i shall not go into further filming details.
The movie started as a basic nostalgic horror movie with bad actor/ice(s). That soon changed when a shocking but amusing funpark element was introduced.
***only for those who've seen the movie: if this entertainment really existed how interesting it would be if a boy/girlfriend had already seen this "ride" and the partner wouldnt have,,,,,,,wouldn't it be so cheap and cool if the boy/girfriend would act real cool towards that partner when s/he thought it was gonna end? Like the boy/girlfriend would say near the end "i love you and i always have", s/he would remember that when they both stepped out of the attraction, easy way to have sex!***
That's just one example why i liked this movie it went from cliché and nostalgia for the old horrors to the new and original y2k style. I feel that the whole movie was a homage to the old movies. The fact that it was a remake doesn't explain that.
The story was about an old spychiatric hospital where once horrible experiements took place. The owner of some funparks rented it or bought it, can't remember. He wanted to make a new attraction of it and so people were invited to the house for compitions purposes, s/he who survived the night would get a cheque for a million bucks.
What i really liked about this movie was that it had such good thought through shock elements that were so confusing to the audience. And this is were the credited "producer of the Matrix" came in, i guess. There was a total confusion in the theatres about wether it was real or not.
I've read a review by someone and it said that it was like the Haunting and it wasn't like that at all. Alltho i must say that it's easy to say something like that. Funny how Hollywood (should that be capped 'h'?!) always comes up with the same ideas like "armageddon" and "deep impact", the paranoia of "the Matrix" and "ExistenZe", the self discoveries of the sixth sence and Fight Club (masterpiece tho and i shouldn't generalize it as a hollywood production).
Anyhow if you haven't seen the movie yet, i've just spoiled it for you but i've warned you,,but you should see it anyhow that is if you don't have a weak heart or if you dislike Marylin Manson's audio/video.
Conclusion: as i said before the movie switches from cliché to originality within a heartbeat. It's surrealistic, funny and nostalgic (esp. the ending, which people seem to most hate about the movie). Watch this movie if your a horror fan and definetly do not watch with the elderly!
*If you noticed that i capped some titles and some not, i've done this out of personal believe of respect, you can figure out the rest.
(Sorry for the typo's and erros, i am Dutch, sue me)
