VH on your review of the film itself, but... (Reply to this comment)

... when you have a DVD with extras, I like to know a bit more about what you thought of the extras. You did say that the commentary was "worthwhile", but that doesn't tell me much what to expect from the commentary. Also, you don't say anything about what you thought of the documentary of Kurosawa.
If this is the only DVD version of the film, these factors would not be a deciding point in which version to purchase, but for films with different versions available, it can make a difference.
I'm a bit of a DVD-extras junkie, which you may have guessed by my review of Singin' in the Rain.

Not so early in his career (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
Kurosawa had already directed 14 films, including his adaptation of The Idiot, as well as "Rashomon" , "Stray Dog", and "The Drunken Angel." He was young for such a project, but so was De Sica with "Umberto D."
Great as Takashi Shimura was (I think, always, in every role), I found it hard to sit still for this very long movie even when I was younger and more patient.
