Jaws .... another movie to torture myself with fear of the ocean.
And to make matters worse... I have relocated to the setting of Jaws. New England. (I am STILL not going near the ocean.)
Universal has just released the 25th Anniversary Edition for DVD. And it is as scary today as it was in the 70's. They dusted off the film and packaged it up real nice and pretty, and it look great. Digitally Mastered... contains some interesting bonus selections, but the out takes were a little disappointing as there were only two they selected.
There is a trivia game, PC screen saver, information on sharks in general, production stills and storyboards (these are kind of neat),and the Making of Jaws included in the bonus features also. The DVD is wide screen format, captioned, dual layer, and has 5.1 surround sound.
All in all for the price... which was about $18.00, it is a very good buy. The story was well put together back in the 70's and seems ageless when watching it in 2000. Other than the wardrobe, this could still take place somewhere now. One of the key elements in this film is the suspense. You know SOMEONE is going to be shark food, but which one?
I have been told that there were numerous problems with the mechanical shark used for the film (available for scaring young children at Universal Studios on the tram ride now) so in scenes where someone could see the shark attacking... there is just water movement. If this is true... (and I believe it) this was much more to the advantage of the film maker as it scared the beejezus out of me just watching it. Though I am still wondering what happened to the dog that was chasing the stick. I think the dogs name was Pippet ? But the next to go was the kid on the raft, so there is not much chance to wonder about poor poochie.
So for a good scare, and a visit with a old classic, pick this up to add to your collection. As I said it is well worth the price.
