"Tirez sur pianiste" (Shoot the Piano Player) over JJ eight days a week. I'm not much of a Jeanne Moreau fan or a a Truffaut fan, but I sort of like "The Bride Wore Black" (the French title doesn't lodge in my brain).
Despite the extraordinary desire on all sides to end the gilded age with heroic war-making, I don't see that the belle epoque had to give way to the chauvinisms (on every side) and massive bloodletting that was the First World War. And I don't think Truffaut saw that necessity either, though his interest in politics and history seems to have been very slight compared to Malle, Godard, or Resnais (though this saved him from the lunacy of Godard's radical chic Maoism...)
