I wonder why there is more stigma against a Neo-Nazi punk sporting a swastika, but none against someone wearing a pro-communist stuff? I mean, communism has claimed the lives of more people than Nazism has. That's not to say Nazism wasn't evil, but I think there should be more movies and education on the evils on communism. COmmunism does the same things nazism/fascism does-scapegoats people who appear to be better off than others, and uses oppression and violence to acheive its ends. In fact, I read that even communistic countries like Pot Pol, Stalin, and AFrican communnistic countries have blended racism and anti-semitism into their regime.

You said " It falters a bit on the polemics that would do a Michael Moore proud. Schanberg’s knee-jerk liberal denouncing of Nixon and blaming Americans in general for Cambodia’s problems reflect the times, at least through his eyes, but they certainly don’t reflect the truth of the situation. "

At last someone with some sense around here!

I'm reading a book about the history of the most evil dictators, with a chapter talking about each, such as Hitler, Stalin, Zulu, and one was Pot Pol. I have read that he was an oppressive man but didn't know that he was responsible for the murder of 3 million. Maybe I need to re-read that chapter and see if I might have not caught that part.

LBJ did not run for re-election in 1968 and his emissaries brokered a peace agreement that was sabotaged by Nixon. The beginning of the movie is 1975 (by which time Nixon had resigned before certain impeachment and Ford was president). The Vietnamese invaded and overthrew the Khmer Rouge in 1979 (when Carter was president), pushing them to the Thai border (where support from the Thai government and acceptance of Khmer Rouge bases in Thailand continued until 1996-97). The 1975-79 Khmer Rouge death toll is estimated at 1.5 million (out of less than ten million Cambodians, ca. 1975).

When Nixon's secret bombing began in 1970, there were fewer than 3000 Khmer Rouge. If he had not managed to scuttle the peace accords while running for president, there would not have been the 1970 bombings. I don't remember the Schamberg character blaming Nixon, but it would both have been in character and very supportable.

who was probably guilty of treason in scuttling the peace agreement in 1968 and extended the war for more years and many more casualties before the same terms were accepted, AND for the bombing of Cambodia. This is barely visible in the movie, however, whereas the ultra-leftist Khmer Rouge out-Maoing even the madness of the Cultural Revolution is very visible and onscreen. Without Nixon and Kissinger (the same duo that joined Mao in opposition to the North Vietnamese....), the chaos that led to the Khmer Rouge seizure of power is highly unlikely (see Shawcross's book).
