Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
When I taught high school I gave my students a treat for Halloween. (Ok, it was a treat for me too as I was very sick that day and wouldn’t have been able to lecture any way.) My classes all got the see The Legend of Sleepy Hollow that day. The day before we had read the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and when they found out we would be watching the Disney movie they were horrified. A cartoon! They were too old for cartoons! Well, at least they could sleep.
Ha. I’m the teacher for a reason. Having read the original Legend the day before, the students were aware of how accurate the Disney version was. And still being kids under all their high school cool they were riveted by the animation and the songs. Even the kids who professed to hate me watched closely, I could see the reflection of the monitor in their eyes.
Legend was made back when Disney was still practically a force of nature. The animation is of such high quality that it can’t be beat by anything past or present that isn’t Disney and truthfully, it runs rings around some of Disney’s lesser pieces (i.e. Aristocats, Pocahontas.)
The songs are, in the words of Tigger, "bouncy, trouncey, flouncey, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!" But with Bing Crosby singing them how could they not be? (And the decision to get Bing to do Icabod Crane was absolutely inspired.)
Word of warning, some of the scenes may be a little intense for small children so you better watch along with them. If they’re old enough to have the attention span to watch the whole thing, they’re probably old enough to handle the Headless Horseman, but not alone. Just hold ‘em tight and tell ‘em that’s why you want them in before dark.
