"Lust For Life" tells the story of Vincent Van Gogh, the tormented artist who was ridiculed in his lifetime and hailed as a genius after his death. One has to wonder, watching Van Gogh's agony and total mental collapse:was he insane because he was an artist, or did his madness make him brilliant?
Kirk Douglas stars as Van Gogh, who seems to fail at everything he attempts to do. He has a desire to go into the ministry, but ends up living in poverty with the people he is trying to help. Disillusioned, pathetic, and unfortunate in his romantic relationships, Vincent throws himself into his art. Seizes by fits of madness and despair, he relies on his brother Theo for emotional and financial support. As he descends deeper into insanity, Vincent's passion for his art grows, but his perception of the world around him is so acute, his feelings so intense, that he cannot transfer them to the canvas.
Frustrated and hopeless, Vincent allows himself to be committed to an asylum, where he can be kept from harming himself during his seizures. Once he is allowed to paint again, however, the doomed Vincent slides into a depression from which he cannot escape, and ultimately shoots himself in the middle of a field.
Looking at Van Gogh's paintings, his genius is evident, yet his struggle against the darkness kept him from realizing his potential during his lifetime. Kirk Douglas IS Vincent in this film, his performance true and heartbreaking. This movie is a fascinating character study of one of the most talented and misunderstood artists in history.
