Opinion Summary
Democracy ensures that the people are governed no better than they deserve
by metalluk | Aug 30 '05
Pros: An all-star cast headed by Wendy Hiller and Rex Harrison; interesting social paradox
Cons: Very dialog-intensive; hard to get all of the dialog due to quickness and accents

Guys and Dolls! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks, was trying to think of the name.

A person has a moral right to steal food, for example, in order to prevent himself or his family from starving to death.

Try telling that to Javert in Les Miz.

"So far, Shaw and I are pretty much of a mind." (Reply to this comment)

Shaw had a lot of political wisdom, and being human, some failings. In this world, nothing is all black or all white, including human beings. Regrettably, Shaw's wisdom will never be used in this country, as the masses are too irremediably brainwashed. You identify correctly the form of government toward which we should strive: "The ideal system is one in which free enterprise is regulated by government for the public welfare..." This is the system of government that the Western European countries have adopted and are trying to perfect (and it's not an easy matter). It is called Social Democracy.

I'm not surprised that you also like Hiller. You're a man of exquisite good taste. I'll be taking tomorrow off from Epinions. I have to migrate south, from Maine to R.I., to get ready for another semester!

another fan of Dame Wendy. I see a bit of resemblance to the do-gooder in "Guys and Dolls," but have never read the Damon Runyon story that the latter was based on.
